Keynote address:
Extracting Knowledge from Electrical Demand Data

There is a growing attention towards the role of the electricity consumers to provide higher flexibility to the demand patterns. The characterisation of the electricity demand changes for different types of consumers (residential, industrial, commercial, and others), also depending on the resolution in time of the data available. Different approaches have been used to create consistent groups of consumers on the basis of the shape of their individual demand patterns (typically resorting to clustering techniques) and to represent the aggregate behaviour of the consumers (resorting to probabilistic techniques to identify the total demand for different aggregation levels). The presentation is focused on the aspects indicated above, highlighting the knowledge on the consumers' behaviour that can be extracted from the elaboration of the demand pattern data, and the services that may be provided to the electrical system operators.

Gianfranco CHICCO is a Full Professor of Electrical Energy Systems at Politecnico di Torino (POLITO), Italy. He graduated in Electrotechnics Engineering (honors) in 1987 at POLITO and obtained the Ph.D. in Electrotechnics Engineering in Italy in 1992. In 2017 he received the title of “Doctor Honoris Causa” from the University Politehnica of Bucharest, Romania. He is the National Secretary and the Scientific Responsible of the Torino unit of the Italian Association GUSEE, and the Responsible of the Torino unit of the Italian Consortium ENSIEL. In the period 2007-2015 he was the President/Coordinator of the Electrical Engineering Courses at POLITO. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, a Member of the Italian Association of Electrotechnics, Electronics, Automation, Informatics and Telecommunications (AEIT), and a registered professional Engineer in the Province of Torino, Italy. He was/is the scientific responsible, the local coordinator or a participant in various projects funded by national and European grants (among which FP6 DIGENAS, FP7 SiNGULAR, FP7 eHighway2050, H2020 Store&Go, H2020 MIGRATE, and H2020 OSMOSE). He is an Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid and of the IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy, an Associate Editor and Subject Editor of Energy, the International journal (Elsevier), an Editor of Sustainable Energy Grids and Networks - SEGAN (Elsevier), and an Editor of Energies (MDPI). His International scientific production includes one book, five book chapters, over 60 journal publications, and over 120 publications in conference proceedings. He was the Chairman of the IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies (ISGT) Europe 2017 (Torino, Italy, 26-29 September 2017) and of the Sixth World Energy System Conference (WESC 2006, Torino, Italy, 10-12 July 2006). He was the Conference co-Chairman of WESC 2008 (Iaºi, Romania), WESC 2010 (Targoviste, Romania), and WESC 2012 (Suceava, Romania), and a co-Guest Editor of the Special Issues of WESC 2006 (Energy, Electric Power Systems Research) and WESC 2010 (Energy).
